What Is Speciality Coffee?

If you've spent any time looking for good coffee, you've probably come across the term speciality coffee. But what does it actually mean?

Simply put, speciality coffee is coffee that has been grown, harvested, processed and roasted to a much higher standard than commercial coffee.

Every coffee bean is graded before it reaches a roaster. To be considered speciality coffee, it must score 80 points or higher out of 100 by certified coffee graders. These coffees are carefully evaluated for flavour, aroma, sweetness, balance and overall quality.

What makes speciality coffee different is the attention given at every stage of the process. Farmers work hard to grow and harvest quality coffee cherries. Importers and roasters select the best lots available. Finally, the coffee is roasted to highlight its natural characteristics rather than hiding them.

The result is a cleaner, more interesting cup of coffee. Depending on where the coffee comes from, you might notice notes of chocolate, caramel, berries, citrus or stone fruit.

At Trá Coffee, we only source speciality grade coffee. We believe great coffee should be approachable and enjoyable, whether you're brewing an espresso before work or making a French press on a Sunday morning.

If you've only ever tried supermarket coffee, speciality coffee can be a completely different experience. The freshness, flavour and quality speak for themselves.
